Useful Information
Xylitol is a naturally occurring polyol found in many fruits and vegetables. It has the same sweetness of sugar but with 30% fewer calories. Xylitol can be a great substitute for sugar in low glycemic diets and individuals who are inclined to get dental caries. The body actually produces small quantities of Xylitol naturally every day and it is perfectly safe to consume in moderation. This sugar is 90% absorbed in our systems, causing very little gastric distress, as opposed to many sugar alcohols, such as Sorbitol, which is only absorbed at approximately 10% causing more typical gas and diarrhea symptoms.
When consuming Xylitol as part of a daily home care plan to reduce dental decay, we recommend “Try for Five”. This translates to: provide the biome (naturally occurring bacteria profile) in your mouth at least five exposures per day in order for the sugar to have its maximum effect at reducing bacterial plaque.
Xylitol can be found in granules (for adding to tea, coffee and water as well as anything else you would sprinkle sweetener on such as oatmeal and cereals), in mouthwashes, toothpastes, gums, mints, mouth sprays and candies.
We recommend beginning small dose (one teaspoon) once or twice a day and adding a second or third dose after 3 or four days to evaluate if your system has any intolerance.
One very effective approach is to dissolve one teaspoon in a bottle of water (8-16 oz), then sipping on the water throughout the morning. This can be repeated a few times throughout the day, depending on your thirst level. This not only provides the Xylitol in ideal quantity but increases water consumption and helps to rinse away food particles, dilute acids from food and bacterial plaque and helps with dry mouth that often comes from medications.
